Marble is a good choice for counter tops if the consumer understands the product. Marble is much softer than granite and is susceptible to scratching and etching. When sealed properly marble will not stain. However marble is mostly comprised of calcium carbonate. This means that acids have an adverse effect on the finish of marble. Acids such as lemon, lime, tomato and wine can etch the finish of marble. This is not a stain but rather a chemical reaction.
For these reasons marble for most people is best suited for non kitchen areas such as bathroom vanity tops, tub decks etc. We have installed many marble kitchens counter tops over the years and for those who really understand marble, people love them.
